As well as Moquettes, E-Leathers are commonly used for transport purposes however there are many advantages to using Moquettes such as the following: On average Moquettes are about 30% cheaper than E-Leathers when comparing the same area of cloth. In addition, Moquettes are specifically woven at 1500mm to 1570mm which is the most economical width for all standard individual seat covering patterns and avoiding waste. Where as typically E-Leathers are 1400mm which will be expensive to fit and have excessive waste.
Moquettes are far superior to any smooth surfaced textile fabric as they cover graffiti, indelible felt tip pen marking, residual chewing gum, cuts/slashes/tears and other forms of vandalism. They are much less liable to damage from scruffs caused by modern clothing accessories such as chains, keys, studs etc... Moquettes are also repairable and the covers can be mended in a lot of cases.
They are extremely durable fabrics & even when exposed to longer deep cleaning intervals or increased wear and tear, the fabric still performs and only requires a vacuum clean at certain intervals. Knitted pile fabrics were tried and failed in this industry as the showed dirt & stains very quickly with shorter lifespans. Leathers are more commonly used in executive/premium coaches. However, one has to accept that Moquettes cannot give that appeal if it is used as the everyday workhorse of the Industry.
The Martindale Testing m/c is an accurate way of testing the wear of different fabrics. Moquettes will normally last between 50,000 and 100,000 rubs which generally lasts about 8 years. Typically, underground trains Moquettes last on average about 4 and a half years as the pattern of usage is very heavy with trains operating for up to 18 hours a day, every day.
Overall, many other types of fabrics have tried to emulate Moquettes for there cost-effective and hard-wearing features in the Passenger Transport Industry. But they are unable to meet the same performance and comfort levels that Moquettes provide whilst maintaining aesthetically pleasing to the eye.
