There have been 334 fire fatalities in the UK this year which has been the worst year for fire deaths since 2010-11. Flame retardants are compounds which are added to a material during the production process in order to suppress the outbreak of fire. The main function of a fire retardant is to prevent the spread of fire or delay the time of flashover so that people can escape.
British Standards are the standards produced by the BSI group to ensure the quality of goods and services meet certain standards as well as worldwide regulations such as BS 4875 and BS 5852. Both impose strict flammability testing for fabrics used in the upholstery process.
The 3 main fire tests as apart of BS 5852 are the Cigarette (Source 1), Match (Source 2) and Crib 5 (Source 5) test. Each test becomes more stringent as the material becomes exposed to a more severe flame during testing. Many products must comply to all 3 tests to meet UK Fire Regulations such as a mattresses or beds for commercial use.
The term ‘Crib 5’ otherwise known as ‘Ignition Source 5’ refers to material’s which have been tested to pass UK Fire Regulations: A Crib 5 material does not mean that it is entirely fireproof, but massively reduces the risk of ignition and could therefore potentially save lives. Crib 5 materials are typically used for Contract and public purposes such as the Health Care Sector, Cinemas, Restaurants, etc.
